Your First Year on Medicare: A Month-by-Month Guide

Congratulations—you're enrolled in Medicare! Now what?

Your first year can be overwhelming. Let me guide you through it month by month.

Month 1: Getting Started (Your Birthday Month)

You'll Receive Your Medicare Card

Red, white, and blue card with:

  • Your name

  • Medicare number (not your Social Security number anymore)

  • Part A and Part B effective dates

Keep this card safe! You'll show it at every doctor visit.

Activate Your Coverage

If you chose Medicare Advantage:

  • You'll also receive your plan's insurance card

  • This is what you'll use (not the red Medicare card)

  • Keep both cards

If you chose Original Medicare + Supplement:

  • You'll receive your Supplement card

  • You'll also receive your Part D card

  • Use Medicare card at providers, show others for billing

Update Your Pharmacy

Bring your Part D card to your pharmacy:

  • CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, etc.

  • They'll update your insurance on file

  • Your first prescription should reflect new copays

Register Online

Medicare.gov account:

  • Create MyMedicare account

  • View claims, coverage, EOBs

  • Check if providers accept Medicare

Your insurance company portal:

  • Register on plan website

  • View ID card, benefits, claims

  • Find in-network providers

Month 2-3: Understanding Your Coverage

Use Your Preventive Benefits

Schedule these free services:

  • [ ] Annual Wellness Visit (not same as physical!)

  • [ ] Mammogram (women)

  • [ ] Prostate exam (men)

  • [ ] Colorectal cancer screening discussion

  • [ ] Bone density test (if at risk)

These are FREE if you use in-network providers.

Test Your Coverage

Visit your primary care doctor:

  • Bring Medicare/insurance cards

  • Ask front desk to verify coverage

  • Make sure everything processes correctly

Fill a prescription:

  • Verify copays are correct

  • Ensure your Part D plan is active

  • Ask about mail order for maintenance meds

Learn Your Copays

Know what you'll pay:

  • Primary care visit: $___

  • Specialist visit: $___

  • Urgent care: $___

  • Emergency room: $___

  • Lab work: $___

  • X-rays/imaging: $___

Write these down and keep in your wallet.

Month 4-6: Maximizing Benefits

Explore Extra Benefits (If You Have Medicare Advantage)

SilverSneakers:

  • Go to participating gym

  • Sign up for fitness classes

  • Start using this benefit!

OTC Allowance:

  • Order vitamins, pain relievers, first aid

  • Usually done online or at pharmacy

  • Use it or lose it each quarter

Transportation:

  • Schedule rides to appointments

  • Know how to request rides

Dental:

  • Schedule your cleaning

  • Get exam if it's been a while

Vision:

  • Get eye exam

  • Use eyewear allowance if needed

Organize Your Medical Records

Create a Medicare binder:

  • Insurance cards (copies)

  • List of medications

  • Doctor names and phone numbers

  • Summary of coverage

  • EOBs (Explanation of Benefits)

Review Your First EOBs

Explanation of Benefits (not a bill!):

  • Shows what Medicare paid

  • Shows what you owe

  • Verify services were received

  • Check for errors

If something looks wrong, call your insurance company immediately.

Month 7-9: Fine-Tuning

Is Your Plan Working?

Ask yourself:

  • Are copays what you expected?

  • Are your doctors in-network?

  • Are prescriptions affordable?

  • Are you using the extra benefits?

  • Any surprise costs?

If not satisfied: You can change during Annual Enrollment (October 15 - December 7).

Check Your Medications

Review your drug costs:

  • Are you still on the most affordable plan?

  • Can you switch to generics?

  • Should you use mail order?

Schedule Preventive Services

Use your remaining free benefits:

  • Flu shot (fall)

  • Diabetes screening (if at risk)

  • Depression screening

  • Any other free services you haven't used

Month 10-12: Annual Enrollment Preparation

Review Your "Annual Notice of Change" (October)

Your plan will mail changes for next year:

  • Premium changes

  • Benefit changes

  • Formulary (drug coverage) changes

  • Network changes

Read this carefully!

Prepare to Compare Plans (October-November)

Make updated lists:

  • Current medications (any new ones?)

  • Doctors you saw this year

  • Specialists you need

  • How many times you visited doctors

  • Total out-of-pocket costs this year

Decide: Stay or Switch? (By December 7)

Stay with your plan if:

  • No major changes for next year

  • You're happy with coverage

  • Costs are still affordable

Switch plans if:

  • Premium increased significantly

  • Your medications aren't covered well

  • Your doctors left the network

  • You found a better value plan

Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 - December 7

This is your chance to make changes for 2027.

I can help: FREE consultation to review your options.
